In 1966, the first motorhome rolled off the Winnebago Industries assembly lines. One such innovation was the "Thermo-Panel", a strong, lightweight sidewall that was a characteristic of Winnebago products. To improve quality, Winnebago Industries manufactured furniture and other components designed specifically for its travel trailers. In 1960, the name of the company was changed to Winnebago Industries. Surviving a rough beginning, the entire operation was purchased by five Midwesterners, with Hanson serving as president. At the time, the town, located in Winnebago County, Iowa, was undergoing an economic downturn, so Hanson and a group of community leaders convinced a California firm, Modernistic Industries, to open a travel trailer factory in a bid to revive the local economy. The company was founded by Forest City, Iowa businessman John K.
During the 1970s and 1980s, Winnebago Industries depended on Native American history and traditions in naming their products, for example "Chieftain" and "Brave." They also used Native American iconography and patterns in their designs and period advertisements. The county is named after the Native American tribe who have historically lived in the area. The company is named after Winnebago County, Iowa, where it used to be headquartered. Winnebago has also manufactured light-to-medium utility vehicles as well as other products. The limited edition D-28CII offered a floor plan that divided the rear bedroom suite from the kitchen and forward social area and included water-resistant carpeting in the bathroom.Winnebago Industries, Inc. All models included a power roof vent, marine toilet with a 30-gallon holding tank, 6-gallon water heater and a 66-gallon pressurized fresh-water system. The bathroom included a fiberglass tub and shower combination on the D-24C, D-24CL and D-28CII models. The RV could sleep eight people and included Sealy Posturepedic innerspring mattresses. The Chieftain models included a fully equipped kitchen with a 7-cubic-foot refrigerator, four-burner stove, eye-level oven and stove vent, double stainless-steel sink and a pressurized water system. Other standard features included cruise control, a positive crankcase ventilation system, power steering and power brakes. Each model included a Dodge V-8, 413-cubic-inch engine that produced 265 horsepower with an automatic three-speed transmission.

The 1972 Winnebago Chieftain Series included six models: the 22-foot D-22C, the 24-foot D-24C and D-24CL, the 27-foot D-27C and D-27CL, and the 28-foot D-28CII. The floor plan in the RD models included a full-width rear dinette and social area. Other bathroom features included a push-button phone-head shower, lavatory and 6-gallon water heater. The bathroom included a marine toilet with 30-gallon tank on the D-20RD and C-20RD while the D-20 and C-20 offered a 21-gallon tank. This RV had a galley with three-burner stove, oven, stainless-steel sink, 4-cubic-foot refrigerator and overhead cabinets. Interior features included sleeping accommodations for up to six people - eight with an optional rear bunk. Each of the models offered standard three-speed automatic transmission, power brakes power steering and dual 70-amp batteries. The C-20 offered a Chevrolet V-8, 350-cubic-inch engine that produced 250 horsepower with Turbo Hydromatic power. The D-20 models included a Dodge V-8, 318-cubic-inch engine that produced 212 horsepower with a positive crankcase ventilation system. The 1972 Winnebago Brave-Series were 20-foot models that included the D-20 and D-20RD and as well as the C-20 and C-20RD.
